How did you get into art?
I've been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. As a kid I would spend endless hours creating entire worlds of characters. Eventually I decided to go to school for art, and received my BFA in illustration from Syracuse University. I guess I never really thought much about it... my art is just an extension of who I am.
How do you get inspiration for the pieces you produce?
The world we live in today seems to be an endless source of inspiration for me. Everything from the war and the state of world politics, to the environment and my daily thoughts and experiences all play roles in shaping the work I am producing.
What has been your best creation to date?
That's a tough one... it's usually the latest piece completed. It's always interesting to look back and see where I've been.
How much do you think hype affects the public perception of what good art is?
Hype will only get you so far... fads fade. I think just getting your work out there is more important than any amount of "hype".If the art is good and continues to get better, people will pay attention... at least I hope so!
Last CD you bought/downloaded/shoplifted?
M.Ward - Post War.
How did you feel when you realised that art could make you some money?
For me, there really was no other way. Granted, the road to doing this full time has been filled with tons of mind numbing side jobs, and a lot of ups and downs... but my path has always remained the same. I never really bought into the whole "starving artist" thing.
Why do so many people spend money on music yet so few buy art?
Good question! It always frustrated me that people seem to spend there hard earned cash on music, movies, etc., rather than purchase a nice piece of artwork for their walls... i think this notion is beginning to change though, and i'm quite optimistic for the future of visual art!
How is your local art scene?
Hmmmm, non existent...!? Well, if you're into beach/boat scenes, nature landscapes, and paintings that look like they should be hanging in a hotel, then you're in the right spot. For artists such as myself, things are not quite up to speed. Although, there seems to be an increase in diverse galleries, shows, and artists in just the past few years. While this is positive, I still think Jacksonville is FAR behind when I look out at what is happening on a global level. The internet has helped to keep me sane!
What makes you happy?
My beautiful wife, our bird Jax, and waking up everyday knowing I am able to continue painting for a living.
What makes you sad?
The way some choose to treat the planet and each other.
Sex, drugs or rock n roll?
Yes, alcohol, and yes.
What's it like to be interviewed?
Kinda strange, but it allows me to stop and reflect on things... which is something I think we should all do more often.
Last book you read?
Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk.
What's your favourite soup?
Italian Wedding Soup or Broccoli Cheddar.
Tell us a secret?
I'll be taking over for Bob Barker as the new host of 'The Price Is Right'.
Quote us your favourite song lyric?
Call up bop and Im bunting stomach,
Koko mop I chop chunking plummet,
Thud on top, I ate the chocodile.
(Soul Coughing)
Is there a downside to being so talented?
The Paparazzi.
Ask yourself (and answer) a question?
Hey Dan, do you want some candy?
No, I don't take candy from strangers.
What's your worst habit?
Staying up too late... i paint until the wee hours of the morning. I have a hard time shutting things down.
What else do you like other than art?
Mountain biking, travel, nature, camping, music, movies, toys, hanging out with friends and family, iced Americano's, a nice coldYuengling or a Guinness(depending on my mood)
Any regrets?
I try not to dwell on the past. I learn from my mistakes and continue to move forward.
Final thoughts?
Thanks for finding me interesting enough to interview... and thanks to anyone who takes the time to check out my work!
