How did you get into art?
It was the other way around.
How do you get inspiration for the pieces you produce?
Depends. I do a lot of commission work, so in those cases my main inspiration comes from what I envision the client wanting for the particular project. When doing art for bands and musicians I usually play a lot of their music and vibe off of that. In general I’m inspired by beauty. My original art is often a quiet reaction to things happening in the world, like pollution, oppression, capitalism, love, spirituality and schtuff like that.
What has been your best creation to date?
Hmmm. I wish I had one, but I don’t. I may be most proud of the children’s book I illustrated a few years ago, All the Way to the Ocean. It was a pretty major undertaking and took a few years from conception to being published, but now it’s out there inspiring kids and adults to take more responsibility for their environment. The book has been translated into Chinese and Spanish and I believe it is being turned into an animated short. But that book is much more straight forward than most of my work, since Joel wrote it to address and explain a very specific issue. I need to kick out some new “best creations” soon.
Last CD you bought/downloaded/shoplifted?
Last CD bought on amazon: Bill Laswell – Reel Dub Sessions.
How did you feel when you realised that art could make you some money?
Freedom is beautiful.
Why do so many people spend money on music yet so few buy art?
I’m not sure I think that’s necessarily true. People aren’t paying for their music as much these days, and more people seem to be buying art, whether it be a toy, print, comic book, painting or even a designer t-shirt. Artist’s seem to making more products at different price levels, which is helping art to be accessible to the average Joe or Jill.
How does it feel to be interviewed?
Special. Thanks to those that are interested.
Have you any hidden talents?
Yes, but I shall keep them hidden.
Sex, drugs or rock n roll?
Or?!? sex, rock n roll and earthy drugs.
Last book you read?
I’m reading 2012 by D.Pinchbeck.
Most treasured possession?
My Mac is pretty old, but if my home went up in flames – that’s the non-living I’d want to save first.
Last time you lied?
Oooh, I’m proud to say I can’t remember. I try and keep it real ya know.
What's your favourite film?
I have never been able to name one.
What's your favourite film?
80's classic The Goonies!!! Such a feelgood film.
Is there a downside to being so talented?
Hand cramps and tight shoulders.
Ask yourself (and answer) a question?
How do you relieve those hand cramps and tight shoulders? Sex, drugs, rock n roll and hoops.
What's your worst habit?
I like drinking coffee, but I don’t like that sometimes I “need” coffee to be productive.
What else do you like other than art?
Nature, music, science, my girlie, folks, philosophy, sociology, playing scrabble and looking under rocks.
Any regrets?
Yes. I’ve been a jerk to people in my day. I’m sorry people. I’ also regret most all the money I’ve spent having others advertise my artwork.
Final thoughts?
Thanks for getting the art out there Mr. Burrows
